| The Duke Blue Devils are Pre-Season #1!

Who, us? | | |
| Truman Smith Rocks the House!

I don't know what you are planning on doing this weekend, but I guarantee that it will not be nearly as exciting as what I am in store for. This man that you see in the picture above is my father in law. He is a marathoner.

He is coming to Arkansas this weekend to run his 8th marathon this year. By the way, if you missed what I just said, his 8th MARATHON THIS YEAR! In fact he just qualified for the Boston Marathon in 2007 this past month. What a feat! His ultimate goal is to run a marathon in all 50 states. He even traveled to Anchorage, Alaska this summer to run the Anchorage Marathon.
My wife and I will be there bright and early Saturday morning to witness history in the making. So join me in cheering on Truman to another incredible finish. Good Luck!

| Happy Halloween!
Halloween is one of those holiday's that means something different to every person. For instance, some might think that this is an evil day, while others find it to be a day filled with joy and family time. There are even some who believe that there is a great pumpkin that exists and brings candy to all good little boys and girls out there. I personally believe that it is about something deeper still. Candy.

Tell me that you wouldn't want to run into this guy in the middle of a chocalate craving. Let's face it folks. People like candy. We like it so much that we are willing to dress up in rediculous costumes, and go door to door begging strangers to give us a little taste of sweetness. I mean, we will even get mad when someone gives us an apple or stupid hard candy.
In honor of this momentous day, I would like to hear from you. What will you be this Halloween? A princess, a soldier, a baseball player, or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle? Who knows, maybe I will send you some candy in the mail, but only if you dress up!

I just watched Super Size me last night, and I must say that I am not craving anything Fast food right now. This movie may not be amazing, and it may not even make a lot of sense to most people, but it does suggest one thing. Eat right. So go on out there and have yourself some raw vegetables.

| The world Series is over, and a team that I despise are now World Series Champs. I don't care for the White Sox, and I will tell you the truth, I wanted the Astros to win. But sometimes life sends you a curveball (pardon the pun). Because I have been watching a lot of baseball lately, I have been thinking a lot about this sport that I love.

I love baseball. It is a pure sport. While no one could claim there aren't flaws in the game (steroids, overpaid players, un-qualified umpires) it is one of the few remaining games that requires more than a muscular body to be a star. In football you could become as large as humanly possible, and still be a Pro-Bowl Defensive lineman. Look at Shaq in the NBA. Can't shoot a free throw, but can't be stopped in the Paint. We have reached a point in athletics were it is no longer important how talented you are, but how big you are. And then there is baseball.
Even those baseball players that look like Mr. Universe must have something "extra" They have to predict which pitch is coming, and still have the coordination to hit it as it flies by you at 100+ MPH. Pure muscle will win out every now and again, but it is the players with a combination of speed, hand eye coordination, intelligence, and pure wherewithal that make it to the Hall of Fame. The real players will run at top speed, and then dive head first directly at another grown man who just so happens to be wearing large spikes on his feet while an extremely hard ball is being thrown at their body! Who can't respect that?

I understand that not everyone loves the game. Hey, not everyone understands it. But I do believe that it should be respected. There is no greater sporting event than a major league baseball game. The smells, sounds, and yes even tastes make places like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park what they are. So go find yourself a team to cheer for, grab a large Coke and Ballpark Frank, and enjoy America's Pastime. Hey, only 157 more days until Opening Day!
